What Is Labor Day Weekend…Actually? Hip Daddy Explores.
Here we are, August 29th 2014 and yet another Holiday weekend is here. We call it Labor Day. Evidently some call it ‘Labour Day’…but let’s not get into that. In today’s world, we sometimes lose sight of exactly what a Holiday actually means (and the history behind it), so Hip Daddy wants to set the record straight. What is Labor Day?
“Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.” There you have it. Pretty straightforward, and an important aspect of American history. Moving on…
The End of Summer
Yes, Labor Day typically signifies the start of school and the end of summer. Boo Hip Daddy Hoo. Saying goodbye to Summer is not easy, but school is fun too…so fine, we can support this idea. That said, global warming is in effect, so the warm temps associated with Summertime are still prevalent post Labor Day, which means it really isn’t over…just yet. Speaking of school, don’t forget to read our Hip Daddy Back-To-School Top 5 Shopping Guide.
The Fashion Implications
Evidently, after this weekend, no matter where you are, it means you cannot wear white…or Seersucker. And given every Hip Daddy has some sort of white pant, this is bad news. White pants rock. In terms of the Seersucker thing- no comment. We rocked it in the 90’s #nuffsaid. (Although it does look nice with a white Jack Purcell.) It’s time to cross into the Fall wardrobe and that means some awesome denim and some very cool lightweight jackets. We can work with that.
Sports Are Awesome
Labor Day weekend features the kickoff of College Football and the middle point of the US Open. And NASCAR usually has a bigtime race this weekend, which means the M&M and Cheerios cars are circling at high speeds on your TV…what’s not to like about that? In all, the weekend makes for some great Hip Daddy sports bonding with the kids. College Football finally has a playoff so EVERY game matters, Dale “Junior” is having a great year, and you can’t deny Serena Williams in Flushing Meadow! Television is okay…in small doses. Enjoy sport.
Barbecues Are A Must
Again, Summer is still here so take advantage of it. Fire up the grill and throw a Labor Day Party…Midwestern style. Burgers. Hebrew National Hot Dogs. Potato Salad. Lays Chips. Heinz Ketchup. Dill Pickles. Mustard Girl Mustard. Lemonade. Corona Light with a lime. Ice cream. Oh, and a check patterned table cloth. Maybe some croquet too. Ladder Ball is a must. Celebrate. It’s Labor Day.
Enjoy the weekend. Labor Day means something, tell the kids more about it. Work ethic is important. And watch some football, eat some food off the grill, start thinking about school, and wear some white…just this one last time.
